EMERGENCY PLUMBING GUIDE

Burst pipe: what to do before a plumber arrives

If a pipe is releasing water, isolate the supply only if the valve is safely accessible. Keep away from electrical hazards and unsafe ceilings. Arrange a plumber to assess the pipe and explain the repair scope before work begins.

Locate the source without opening walls

Tell the plumber whether water is visible at an exposed pipe, through a ceiling, or behind a fixture. Note which rooms are affected. Do not cut into a wall or dismantle equipment to prove where the break is. A hidden leak may require diagnosis before the repair can be priced.

Explain what has been isolated

Report whether you closed a fixture valve or the main supply and whether the flow changed. If a valve is stuck, inaccessible or unfamiliar, do not force it. Ask the plumber or building manager for help. Isolation contains the problem; it does not make the pipe repaired.

Plan access and restoration

Clarify who authorizes opening a wall, moving a fixture and replacing damaged finishes. Ask whether the quote includes pipe repair only or also access work and reinstatement. A plumbing repair and drying or restoration may require separate providers and estimates.

Document the sequence

If safe, record when the leak began and take photos from a dry location. Keep the estimate, approval and invoice. Ask your insurer what records it requires rather than assuming a particular repair or cause is covered.

Find local service information

Start with your city so you can prepare the address, access and estimate questions for a local request. Current availability depends on participating independent plumbers.

Is this a plumbing emergency?

An active leak that cannot be contained, wastewater entering living space, or a loss of essential water service needs prompt professional assessment. A dripping tap with a working isolation valve may allow a scheduled visit. Immediate danger comes first: leave an unsafe area and contact emergency services.

Frozen pipes: warning signs and repair questions

Little or no flow at a tap can indicate a frozen pipe, but it can also have other causes. Tell a plumber which fixtures are affected and whether a leak is visible. Never use a blowtorch or open flame to thaw a pipe.

Emergency plumber costs: compare complete estimates

Emergency plumbing prices depend on callout terms, diagnosis, labour, parts, access and after-hours conditions. Ask for a written scope in your local currency. A published hourly rate alone does not establish the total repair cost.

How to choose an emergency plumber

Confirm the plumber’s identity, relevant qualifications, service area and estimate before approving work. Ask how additional work is agreed and how concerns are handled. Reviews are useful context, but they do not replace verification for the particular job.
